Most of the players hate S2 but love the game why ?

the game is still well designed except for shitty, useless heroes like emerald warden / parasite (or overpowered ones like monkey king)

Think about back in beta, this game was awesome. Mostly dota heroes, some pretty cool S2 heroes, and totally free to play and mess around. Then after release it was still good. Though S2 failed to live up to a bunch of promises, we still had new dota ports coming out quite often. It seems like S2 still didn't care about money back then, since even though accounts cost $30, the stats reset for $20 were glitched for months, allowing you to use a method to get a reset but not have your CC charged. I bet S2 lost hundreds of thousands over this, since I got like $200 out of it and rykon probably got $2000+ alone. I guess they thought they would make it big and would be around for a long time, making way more money from publicity + tourneys + new customers.

Then the whole legal thing comes along when S2 tried to port Furion. Valve pretty much owned them legally, not only saying they couldn't copy heroes, but not even the IDEAs of heroes. That's a pretty far stretch of copyright, but Valve just had way better lawyers I guess. Ever since that point S2 went to shit. I guess they realized they couldn't compete with Valve and DotA2. Think about it, soon after that HoN 2.0 comes out. The stats reset glitch is fixed, and people can purchase coins already before they can even earn them with TMM.

More and more expensive shit comes to the store. MSIvy slither, badass pack, etc., basically forcing you to purchase coins to buy them. Then, right before Valve announces the huge tourney publicly (I'm sure there was already talk aout  it within the game developer community), S2 makes HoN f2p. Why? It's more money in the short run for them. Not many people were buying HoN anymore anyway, since Valve's DotA2 was known to be coming out very soon. Getting 100,000s of LoL players for free who would probably spend $$ on the shop was the fastest way to make a quick buck.

All this basically points to S2 knowing that DotA2 will completely crush their game. So, my question is, why are people still defending HoN when the company that designs it has already given up on it?

myself and i'm pretty sure many others did not invest anything into hon, hell i didnt even buy the game cuz i cant from my country
i obv dont like the direction game is going to but that doesnt mean i dont enjoy playing

only thing i can say that hurt the game is the ddos, constant server issues failing to load game and crashes becoming more and more common specially after f2p
the image of s2 has gone down and i think thats what hurts the game more than anything

Copying their concepts/ideas would be theft of intellectual property... Believe it or not this is a huge deal in a lot of industries. It's not in the public eye a lot, but there are lawsuits all the time of accused or legitimate theft of peoples ideas.

Closed Beta (April 24th, 2009)

Open Beta (March 21st, 2010)

Retail (May 12th, 2010)

Flint released, last dota port (August 14, 2010) http://www.gamereplays.org/heroesofnewerth/portals.php?show=news&news_id=651193

HoN 2.0 (December 13th, 2010) - Team match making and gold/silver coins

HoN 3.0 Interview (June 9th, 2011)

HoN goes F2P (July 29th, 2011)

Actually I started to lose faith in S2 around 2 months after retail (which was a month sooner than the last DotA port). Two months after retail and there was still no sign of a good match making system and a map editor with custom maps (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showpost.php?p=1912467&postcount=16). Around that time they added the DC icon and their netcode went to shit. They were too slow with updating and improving their game. Took them 2 weeks to nerf armadon whose quills did double the damage. Took them months to nerf chalice. Took them months to invent chat disconnect for casters to avoid getting spammed. Took them months to fix the interface so you could control multiple units like you could in any modern RTS. Took them months to stop pause blocking.

Obviously S2 kept treating their customers progressively worse as time went on. They could not maintain their game at the rate people consumed it. However when the shop first came out it was sort of a lateral move. The shop didn't really do much to effect the game, as you can mod the game pretty freely. You're wrong about S2 forcing you to buy coins. The only people who say that are poor people and/or children. But given the fact that S2 can't maintain their game and they make terrible decisions all the time, you just knew the shop was going to sell some questionable garbage down the line. Obviously the EA program is a shit on every legacy owner's chest.

If you read this blog post about how Maliken is a homophobe/bigot/racist/shitty idea guy (http://gay-nerds.com/site/industry/really-s2games-really), you'd find out that the shop was planned well in advance, like 6 months before it was released to the public. EA was also discussed months in advance (http://www.reddit.com/r/HeroesofNewerth/comments/j400l/an_s2_designers_viewpoint_on_f2peapwe_are_our/). The stuff they did was not really made in haste to make quick bucks, but it was more like burning bridges and milking customers dry.

I think you're getting confused about people's love for HoN and hate for S2. Just because you like HoN as it's the best game of it's genre doesn't mean you like S2. Just because you wear Nike doesn't mean you support their child labor practices. Just because you like McDonald's french fries, doesn't mean you like their burgers. Since every company is run by humans they are flawed in some way. It's just that in this instance, S2 is actively pissing off their customers. Nike having 8 year olds make their shoes doesn't really affect you on a daily basis. S2 changing the model of their game make you deal with it every day.

This game was probably doomed from the start, as the CEO is not only a homophobe/bigot/racist but also an un-innovative leech. He copied his fucking porn business from his college roommate.
