I saw a bunch of polish and french people playing LoL on their laptops in the main social area of one of the buildings at my university. I went over to criticise them, until they lost. Then I left.
It's no question that HoN is entirely better. LoL only got the attention it has, because it's free.
This can easily be observed on the Hungarian sub-forum, as well as probably everywhere else: The hunsub has a thread for LoL and HoN separately, and as soon as HoN went f2p, LoL thread died.

I bet it was because people were bored of LoL after playing it for 1-2 years. The LoL thread will probably go back up once they realize how hard the learning curve is and how fucked they are for not having a legacy account.

Tbh, I play LoL just as much as HoN. I like them both equally, and I get a craving to play each of them at different times of the day. Sometimes it's one, sometimes the other.
I've been playing League since last November, HoN since closed beta, and I'm getting bored of neither.
I guess you're right, though, HoN has a higher learning curve than League does, and I've already come across people that were astonished at the deny mechanic, and how much more you have to do in HoN.
