Insanitarius should only be used on mali if your team is going for a pushing strategy with defiler/polly or what not and you guys plan on ending the game in the mid game. The later the game goes, the less value insanitarius holds.

Also if you are going mali in like an AP/BP game, make sure someone picks up either demented, empath or martyr. Preferably empath though. It's a bitch to kill mali with one of those support heroes.

whispering (get creep start stacking, so ez to kill tristack with mali) -> steamboots -> insanitarius
get those at ~20min and u can own with 2.3k hp and 250dmg and massive lifesteal when low hp
after those shrunk (if needed) -> daemonics ->rift/symbol -> symbol/rift
and get power supply or chalice for some mana

i really like to play mali atm and once you got whisp+insa (only 4.7k cash) you can own quite hard already. dunno about pro games but in pubs you should join all teamfights once you got whisp+insa cause nearly no hero is as strong as mali at this time (as i said, 2.3k hp and 250dmg at 20min with nice attackspeed and lifeleech)
also won last 5-6 games with him

Mali is soooo boring why would you want to play him..

play him often and you'll get better simple as that.

item build is adjustable and not that important.

what more important is your style of play.
