Contrast and compare the differences between the attitudes of pro players in SC2 and HoN. Use this to explain what it is that's holding "MOBA" games back from being big time competitive e-sports.

Well HoN is where I'm going to base my perspective in the essay, but contrasting it with other game genres (MMO's, FPS, etc) also work, so input on the culture surrounding HoN or other games is useful.

humm, ok I'm kinda drunk so I'll give you the best I can for ideas for topics/paragraphs

can start with general intro to gaming.
-differential gaming

- then explain differences between MMO, RTS, FPS
-classify HoN as RTS?

- then possibly HoN as a competiive game in comparison to others

- hon as "casual" game in compared to others

i dont want to down you but games are REALLY hard to write an essay about, i can tell this because multiple people have asked help for writing topics about this sort of thing, i hope this helps you.
I am fucking hammered.

Well the thing is I wasn't going to base my essay really around HoN, just from the perspective of a HoN player (I probably didn't explain that too well in my original post)... So like I would talk about gaming culture in general and relate it back to my experience in playing HoN. I was going to discuss aspects that pertain to all gaming, rather than just 1 game.

I don't think this paper will be too hard to write, I already got some good ideas from this thread. Plus the papers aren't even graded, we just gotta write em, discuss em, and we get an A.

Thanks for the input though and everyone else, I probably got enough now.

Good input, I actually had a similar idea about the anonymity factor and the breeding of trolls and griefers. Are trolls and griefers considered the same thing? I always thought trolls were the people (winning or losing) who explicitly try to get an emotional response out of people... Like those people who are winning and repeatedly flame the other team for sucking would be considered trolls, while people who just try to throw games would be griefers. This is my take anyway.

As for the lack of females, wouldn't it just be because they have less of an interest in competitive games like HoN? The female population goes up quite a bit in MMORPGs since they are less competitive.

LOL the addiction part is very true, didn't think about this... but will probably write about it now. I don't really get the part where you say the learning curve shifts once a public score is involved though, what do you mean?

Yea the ego thing is a big factor, will definitely write about that.

Thanks for the input everyone, sent each of you some fg for your ideas. Still open to new ideas if anyone has some.

yes, griefers and trolls are different
i guess there are no textbook definitions so this is my take on it as well
a troll would be just acting a different persona, whether it's pretending to be foreign by pasting googled korean phrases into the game, shit talking everybody including team, etc, etc, where a griefer would be the dude sneaking a courier over to the enemy, calling people bad after blatantly suiciding (combination of both trolling and griefing) etc etc

u will not be able write a decent essay in hon

because there is no other research

everything u say in the essays are ur opinions and observations

unlike u are credible as a person with authoirty, whom you are not, this is a shitty topic

if you want to write something about culture, u should write about gang communities or cultures of a company, like southwest or disneyland. u'll get many credible resources etc

edit: if university lets u write something about hon and the prof gives u an A, ur univ must b shit

u need sources and citations from credible places like journals, newspapers, etc

u can do research maybe on WOW or online gaming, but i highly doubt theres any extensive research on the direct culture of a game. maybe gaming related to violence. some shit like that. but i think its a myth
