Most importantly, when you're new, keep playing different heroes. No matter how good you get with an individual hero if you don't understand what every hero is capable of then you can't succeed. It takes time, but if you focus too much on one hero or hero type, you'll have no chance of moving further in skill. Now, once you've reached the competitive stage you get to pick a specialty, but that comes much later.
