KDR means nothing if you are playing support heros. All they should do is get assists, they do not need kills.
You want to get your carry fed. He's a carry for a reason.

My most played hero = Demented Shaman, about 38% of the time, my KD is 1.1:1, I don't KS, nor do I really get that many kills, if I get any it's from a heal in a team fight, or forgetting to press H to let the carry get the kill. BUT staying alive is VERY important, as hard as it can be when playing support (Other than Accursed, anyone who dies more than 3 times on Accursed is either on a baiting team, running into the other team like a spastic or just terribly unlucky.)

Not necessarily, could have just been Moon Queen with your multistrike, could have been Vindicator and they could have cancelled your curse pretty much instantly by casting a skill. Assists come about sometimes for no reason, on Demented Shaman, I can get an assist just for Entangling someone, which sure, early game that DoT is pretty good, I get a few kills every now and then when they run away on low health, but lategame, it definitely doesn't scale out well.
