Writing an essay on HoN... more specifically, the culture of online gaming (in HoN mainly). I figure asking HoN players for topics would be a good start... so shoot me some topics. I need to write on a variety of topics, so post as many as you want. If you post some good ones that I end up using, I'll send you some fgz.

Culture
- Anonymity breeds 'griefers' known more commonly as 'trolls' (could cover an entire topic with this, using popular examples such as Leeroy Jenkins of WoW)
- Lack of females, very sexist and racist communities
- General population seems fairly frustrated and elitist (examples could be choosing Scout and readying causing 5 minutes of microphone rage or something like not buying a courier)

write about how games are designed around addiction, to keep players hooked even though they despise the game. theres tons of articles about it to read up on.

also how players learning curve shifts drastically once a public score is involved.

wow, i am drunk but you should find a better topic to write on

if this is for something like "social studies" write on like "psychology of gamers"
- A - all gamers want to win
- B - all gamers think they are invincible
- C - "fuck you nerd" aka if you beat a gamer you are nerd and they arenot

srs hon as a topic is terrible.

Good input, I actually had a similar idea about the anonymity factor and the breeding of trolls and griefers. Are trolls and griefers considered the same thing? I always thought trolls were the people (winning or losing) who explicitly try to get an emotional response out of people... Like those people who are winning and repeatedly flame the other team for sucking would be considered trolls, while people who just try to throw games would be griefers. This is my take anyway.

As for the lack of females, wouldn't it just be because they have less of an interest in competitive games like HoN? The female population goes up quite a bit in MMORPGs since they are less competitive.

LOL the addiction part is very true, didn't think about this... but will probably write about it now. I don't really get the part where you say the learning curve shifts once a public score is involved though, what do you mean?

Yea the ego thing is a big factor, will definitely write about that.

Thanks for the input everyone, sent each of you some fg for your ideas. Still open to new ideas if anyone has some.

It's actually for Anthropology, gaming as a culture. Doesn't have to be only about HoN, but HoN is the only game I play right now so that's where I have to base my perspective, but input on other games is good... like how guywhosebrother said about the addiction thing, which I'm assuming pertains mostly to MMO's

It was a "choose your own topic essay" in which we had 20 minutes to decide what we wanted to write, HoN was the only thing that came to mind lol
