I saw this video a while ago and I recently found it again, so I thought I'd post it here. I don't know he's doing now, but he's a great basketball player and it seems that he learned some valuable lessons from the Bible. I play in a men's basketball league (game tomorrow night actually). This video will help inspire me for tomorrow night's game :)

And yes, I'll be listening to Lecrae during the pre-game warm-up and probably a bit earlier :P

I disagree with his father, putting a basketball hoop at home is not a bad thing to do. If he doesn't want to do chores around the house, that's his problem for not teaching him correctly, but putting a court @ home would help increase his skills even great. This might be one of those stories where it will end prob being the dad that will take his son's life away.

His dad has it right. It's about priorities and balance. If you put a basketball court at home, pretty soon you're making basketball out to be more important than other things, including God.

Yeah, I have to agree with this.

@HST: it's about balance. I understand the argument that if the dad allows the kid to practice more, the kid will get better. However, if the kid is ALL about basketball, he may burn out. And besides, with greater balance, he will have a broader perspective about the game. And he will have more to draw from when he needs it most. It's awesome that the son is into God and he's really into school, too. It will only enrich his experience :) Besides, if the kid doesn't make it in basketball, he needs to have something to support him. He needs to know his family will be proud of him no matter what he does. Balance helps for that, too. As a basketball enthusiast and as a father, I was impressed by this video. I love to see kids (and fathers) like that.

I work (two jobs) at a gymnasium and I see a LOT of kids who play basketball, and I make a point of engaging with them and their parents. I volunteer for a basketball clinic (for kids) on Monday nights, for example. And when I meet the parents, I'm often worried about the kids. I remain respectful to the parents, but I know that if you don't teach your kids the right things (including balance) there are so many things that can consume them and take them away from what's right. The kids with greater balance tend to excel. And, for the record, some of the Christian kids really excel, because they have an automatic faith in themselves and in a higher power :)

@REW,njaguar, I Just am afraid his dad might end up making decisions for him when he doesn't want to. I know countless kids @ my school and friends that want to go another direction (Play baseball instead of basketball) or play baseball instead of going to school, but the parents keep forcing them to make a different decision, that is where I think his dad might come into fault. But I do agree with him partially, he needs to stay home and be more focused on God, but you can still be focused @ home, do good in school with a Basketball Gym at home?? Makes no sense not to have one, just let him play when he's done with work. That part just seems a tad bit over-controlling to me and I disagree with that part, being at home is not a place to just read the bible/etc, Going to church is far superior and more helpful than staying at home, another issue is; his dad said "stay" home and do chores/etc which I agree with. Kids should mature and grow up doing chores, but the Kid even said in the video and seemed confident that he was going to follow God more regardless of what's in his way. I liked that part, that brings me to my whole point on why the father would try to control him that much about not bring a hoop in his house or whatever, seems fishy to me. Like I said, I just pray it doesn't end up as of those stories on the news where the kid at the end is forced to do something he doesn't want to.

and njag just went to bed i think, i will be to, i got class tomorrow we can discuss this l8er gn guys

I think the father is just trying to guide his son. Dads who want to control their sons tend to make it all about the game, and nothing else ;) Most dads (hopefully) have the best intentions with their children; that doesn't always guarantee that things will turn out well. But if you introduce limits and boundaries for your children, you end up providing them with an understanding of how each thing has its place. It seems to me that, based on his conditioning and skill, the boy in that video easily gets enough practice time. Maybe the dad will let his son have a basketball hoop at home later, and maybe not. He's not saying no to basketball. He's just saying yes to priorities, especially because his son loves basketball so much. So far it looks like it's working :) The kid is grateful, humble, incredibly skilled, and he attributes his sucess and joy to God--all that and he seems genuinely happy and mature!

I looked back and I think I was over looking the video, rew is right, thank you for pointing this out. My comprehension sometimes is just horrible. ( as Why I am still in english 98@ college)

Thanks rew for the explanation I believe you 100% when you talk about the priorities first.
