His dad has it right. It's about priorities and balance. If you put a basketball court at home, pretty soon you're making basketball out to be more important than other things, including God.
Yeah, I have to agree with this.
@HST: it's about balance. I understand the argument that if the dad allows the kid to practice more, the kid will get better. However, if the kid is ALL about basketball, he may burn out. And besides, with greater balance, he will have a broader perspective about the game. And he will have more to draw from when he needs it most. It's awesome that the son is into God and he's really into school, too. It will only enrich his experience

Besides, if the kid doesn't make it in basketball, he needs to have something to support him. He needs to know his family will be proud of him no matter what he does. Balance helps for that, too. As a basketball enthusiast and as a father, I was impressed by this video. I love to see kids (and fathers) like that.
I work (two jobs) at a gymnasium and I see a LOT of kids who play basketball, and I make a point of engaging with them and their parents. I volunteer for a basketball clinic (for kids) on Monday nights, for example. And when I meet the parents, I'm often worried about the kids. I remain respectful to the parents, but I know that if you don't teach your kids the right things (including balance) there are so many things that can consume them and take them away from what's right. The kids with greater balance tend to excel. And, for the record, some of the Christian kids really excel, because they have an automatic faith in themselves and in a higher power
