He did show mercy... For ages, he let man live in the land, and continue. It came to a certain point where he said, thats enough... How many more generations of children would have grown up in the corrupt perverted society.
It said before the flood, "The thoughts of man's heart were only evil always."
Kind of like how we are as a society today.
I totally agree with God, its the same thing as with Sodom & Gommorah. It came to a point when it would actually be merciful to wipe them out.
Remember, its not the physical death that matters, but the judgement.
