I am ashamed to admit that i have yet to read the whole bible. Back in 2007 i read genesis and revelations from front to back and in revelations (i dont know where any more)
it says that men who pray in public in order to be seen praying will not receive the reward of heaven as men who pray in privacy, because the men who pray in privacy
are the true believers, where the men who pray in public are not
To me this raises the question about the legitimacy of churches...because are churches not a public venue for people to gather in masses to pray?
And will i be penalized for not going to church to pray when i pray almost daily at home? Many nights before bed i pray and randomly through
different days i will randomly say the lords prayer, but is that good enough?

/edit sorry in Genesis, not revelations
Actually I just posted a thread that answers your very question. Even just read the first part:
