“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.”

A bible verse that i do not understand.

what does this mean if anyone knows?

Doesn't "Believing" in God make you full of spirit and holyness? at least you start feeling that way when u think about god.

so what does the bible mean when it says that you should be "poor in spirit"?

To me, when we think we're good spiritually, we don't hunger to seek Him.

For example, those who are broken in spirit and are at their rope's end are the ones who will actually turn to Him.

My wife's personal opinion is that its similar to "The Meek" in that they understand the fact that they're worth nothing apart from Christ. They don't boast in their Christianity, but are humble and open to spiritual correction and learning; knowing that they will never be completely learned and always striving for a better understanding of Scripture.

And she likes your bench press rat :)

It's best translated humble modernly, as I know.

Poor in spirit, likely was the common expression for humble at the time.

Like the antonym prideful and the phrase "full of yourself" More people, seem to understand, by my personal experience, when you say their "full of themselves" than they are being prideful.
