I've been looking for a good set of Bible commentaries.

I've looked in the John MacArthur ones, but I don't know if I want to be reading the views of someone so ultra-conservative.

Any ideas on other ones that are written by reasonable people; I'm looking for both OT and NT.

What specifically are you wanting to learn, that you are not getting without a commentary?

I always try to recommend "The Large Catechism" by Luther.

Even if you are Catholic, it still has some really insightful points on Christian life.

My guess is he'd want something that provides the context of history surrounding the time when any given book was written, and discusses things that you could normally only hear about if you were to get a degree in religious studies.
