By beliving in god, is that enough?

Say you are born into a family who believes in x religion, and you grow up your whole life only knowing of that religion.

How easy would it be to switch over to Christianity? Not very easy at all, so is that person condemned to hell?

Yes believing in God is enough.

I used to think religion was pointless and I could believe on God on my own and was completely comfortable with it.

Religion is good in the sense you get to speak with people about your beliefs and have fellowship and friendship with your peers.

Religion I feel is more of a guideline than it is a necessity.

Believing in God is not enough. For salvation, you must not only believe in Jesus, but you must accept him into your heart and have a relationship with him. Even the Devil believes in God.
