Smoke from a campfire doesn't cause permanent damage in my knowledge...
It sure can and it can cause damage on a massive scale in the right conditions.
EX: Inuit, Native Americans and others would have a fire inside of their domicile at all times. Archaeology shows massive, permanent smoke damage to the exhumed bodies lungs. This has been concluded to be a direct influence of the poor ventilation and continual smoke inhalation from the fires.
Bare in mind, this is an extreme example in the area of extreme damage. It's just a good example of how far the rabbit hole goes, so to speak, in this instance.
