Smoke from a campfire doesn't cause permanent damage in my knowledge...

It sure can and it can cause damage on a massive scale in the right conditions.

EX: Inuit, Native Americans and others would have a fire inside of their domicile at all times. Archaeology shows massive, permanent smoke damage to the exhumed bodies lungs. This has been concluded to be a direct influence of the poor ventilation and continual smoke inhalation from the fires.

Bare in mind, this is an extreme example in the area of extreme damage. It's just a good example of how far the rabbit hole goes, so to speak, in this instance.

I don't think the reasoning for staying sober is 100% about protecting your body from damage. There are many passages in the bible that talk about having a "clear mind" in all things. It also talks about not over-indulging in eating (meat), so as to be a glutton. An overarching theme is moderation in everything, but some things should be avoided entirely. When you're in the snakes den, you may be able to prevent being bitten for a while, but the longer you stay in it, the more likely you are to get bit. Tis better to avoid the snakes den entirely.
