How did the thief on the cross get saved? Obviously he wasn't able to do the "work" of water baptism, right?
Was it by grace or by works that he was saved?
It is by grace that the thief on the cross was saved.
However, I think a lot of people miss the fact, somehow, that while Jesus was on the Cross, the Old Law was still in effect. It was not until after Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection that the New Law came into effect.
The thief on the cross was saved by grace, but he was under the Old Law and did not need baptism, as many of the baptism advocates would say. You are not saved by works anyhow. Works follows from, and is evidence of, your faith. But no matter how much you work, you cannot merit the grace of God. However, if you have freely received the gift of the grace of God, it is clear in the Bible in the writings of Paul and James that works follow your faith.
