The way I've always understood Speaking In Tongues was from Act 2:1-11

Quote
1] When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.
2] And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
3] And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
4] And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5] Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.
6] And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
7] And they were amazed and astonished, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
8] And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?
9] Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10] Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,
11] both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God."

Essentially, when a person is truly speaking in tongues (i.e. the Holy Spirit speaking through them), everyone who can hear them doesn't hear anything other than normal speech in their native language (verse 8). When Pentacostal churches have groups of people "speaking in tongues" this might be an expression of these people's faith, but I haven't seen any Biblical basis for doing so (if I've just over-looked it, share it with me :) ).

speaking in tongues, just as every other manifestation of the spirit, should be done decently and in order.

paul explains it in detail in 1Corinthians14, it is perfect prayer, it expresses our trust in God by allowing him to give us the words,

we should rather speak 5 words with understanding than a thousand words without understanding, speaking in tongues in churches is pointless unless it is interpreted.

all 9 manifestations listed in 1Corinthians 12 are indeed real and useful TODAY. i have personally experienced all of them in my life, and seen countless others do so as well.

if anyone has any specific questions about their function or how to go about manifesting, please message me =)

this is constantly my main subject of study because it is the biggest undeniable part of Christianity that sets us apart from other belief systems.

we have the power of God.

Regarding that specific point, from Acts 2 (quoted above) it is pretty clear that true speaking in tongues shouldn't need an interpretor. Everyone who hears the Holy Spirit speaking through someone in tongues will hear them as if they're talking in their own native language. This is why I simply can't understand why people think they can force themselves to have a gift of the spirit.

the day of pentecost was obviously a very specific and historic event.

"And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven [διαμεριζομεναιG1266 V-PEP-NPF] tongues [γλωσσαιG1100 N-NPF] like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them"

we never again see this fiery tongue imagery accompanying speaking in tongues, this event was specific to the day of pentecost, the first moment that the spirit was available to reside in us.

think logically, if you are in church with only english speakers, and you only speak english, how would it be considered "speaking in tongues" if you spoke in english? lol

Jude1:20
“But you, beloved, building [εποικοδομουντεςG2026 V-PAP-NPM] yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying [προσευχομενοιG4336 V-PNP-NPM] in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God."

one usage of tongues is to build yourself up spiritually, i think of it as akin to "spiritual weight lifting" when done in your private prayer life.

1 Corinthians 14:1-19
"Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue."

I could not possibly put it better than paul did. you can not simply look at acts2 and ignore the rest of the scriptures sir.
