The problem is that the bible says that no man knows... so if i truly proclaim to know, then it can't happen.

Mark 11:22-24...And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

So if i truly believe it, then it shall come true, but by believing it, it can't come true... you see the dilemma?

except you DONT actually know is his point. you proclaim to know, it doesnt mean you do.

also...

it wasn't just claiming that today might be the day... it was a full belief that today was the day, so that it couldn't possibly be the day.

A sincere belief about today being the day isn't enough for knowledge though.

To have knowledge you have to have a belief that is TRUE and you have to have some REASON for thinking that it is true. (In philosophy this is a minimal definition of knowledge: a justified, true belief.)

To claim that today is the day is not a justified belief. Therefore it can't be knowledge. It could still be the day, though, but you wouldn't know this because you have no reason to think it is.

This is also just contradictory: you don't want the world to end, so to know that it isn't you will claim that it is? That is, for you to know that today ISNT the day, you claim to have knowledge it IS. That is a contradiction.

Not trying to be mean my friend. I am a philosophy and theology student, so this is how I think about what you've raised.

I grew up in the church, and one of the big topics was the end of the days. The bible clearly states that no man knows when the end of the days are or when Christ will return. So I use to never want the world to end, so I would wake up and proclaim that today WAS the end of days! This way, by known that today was the end of days, it could not be the end of days cause the bible says no one knows when it is. Everyone I have ever told about this thought it was weird... is it?

Just because you guessed it didn't mean you knew when it was. Consider the unexpected hanging paradox:

A judge tells a condemned prisoner that he will be hanged at noon on one weekday in the following week but that the execution will be a surprise to the prisoner. He will not know the day of the hanging until the executioner knocks on his cell door at noon that day.

Having reflected on his sentence, the prisoner draws the conclusion that he will escape from the hanging. His reasoning is in several parts. He begins by concluding that the "surprise hanging" can't be on Friday, as if he hasn't been hanged by Thursday, there is only one day left - and so it won't be a surprise if he's hanged on Friday. Since the judge's sentence stipulated that the hanging would be a surprise to him, he concludes it cannot occur on Friday.

He then reasons that the surprise hanging cannot be on Thursday either, because Friday has already been eliminated and if he hasn't been hanged by Wednesday night, the hanging must occur on Thursday, making a Thursday hanging not a surprise either. By similar reasoning he concludes that the hanging can also not occur on Wednesday, Tuesday or Monday. Joyfully he retires to his cell confident that the hanging will not occur at all.

The next week, the executioner knocks on the prisoner's door at noon on Wednesday — which, despite all the above, was an utter surprise to him. Everything the judge said came true.

Also if you don't want it to be the end of the days (neither do I) we fail to understand God's plans and are in our selfishness and we should really understand the cost of following Jesus: The Cost of Following Jesus
57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”

But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”

62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

I hadn't thought to bring up that paradox. We considered a similar one in philosophy that had to do with a "surprise quiz" at some time in the week.

The only problem with this is that it assumes we can reason backward from the last moment in human history until today and conclude Christ will never return.

Well, maybe we can if there were a date for, say, the heath death of the entire universe. But I don't think anybody has that.

The point that you made though, which I agree with, is claiming today is the day Christ will return is neither necessary nor sufficient for knowledge that the event will occur.

To know and to proclaim to know are not the same thing.
