of course you are right, the order is life -> death -> final judgement.
Anyways, the whole life is like a large exam (I hope you know what I mean, my english is not the best). And our LORD punishes the bad people already various times while they are living - because he loves us so much that he tries to help us to find the right way, the way to him. So it's not even to see as a punishment, it's more like an education.
Anyways, to your question about homosexuality. Every human being has the choise. Do you think the people in Sodom and Gomorrha had sex with animals, family members and the same gender because they were born like this? No! GOD punished them, because they hated him that much that they acted like this. And the final judgement came after this, because those GOD-hating individuals will burn in hell. Praise the LORD, Hallelujah!
Also I want to remember you to Romans 1:24-27
"Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."
