It is ok to be asking these types of questions.
Having these type of questions is not a sin, and infact, it's a good idea to know what the answer to "sex questions" are, but having thoughts about doing these types of things with your boyfriend or girlfriend is a sin. There is a difference between knowing what God says is ok and not ok before marriage and lusting on these things.
I suppose it COULD be a philosophical question, but I'm pretty sure his "thanks for help" indicates that he has thought about doing it, and is considering whether or not to do it based on whether or not it's a sin. That is to say, he wants to do it, but may abstain because it's a sin (which hardly matters, since wanting to do it is already sinning anyway).
But you are right, he could potentially be married already, for example, and have no personal interest in the matter as it would not apply to him.
