God sent his son to live a perfect life and die for your sins. If you did this, and people were denouncing the name of your son, or even refusing to acknowledge it, would you let these people experience paradise? God is merciful, but he is also just.

So then everyone that died before Jesus's sacrifice went to hell (with the noted exceptions of Enoch and Elijah)? Sucks for them. But hey, that's justice for you.

Before Christ, there was law people had to live by. The old testiment tells us that there was no such thing as salvation. People were judged by well they lived according to the law of that time.
