Why is the doctrine of “justification by faith through grace” central to the theology of the Reformation?

I understand what it means to be saved through grace, but why is it central to the theology of the Reformation?

If you are speaking about THE reformation started by Martin Luther (and others such as John Calvin) it was to distinguish themselves of the "corrupt" Catholic beliefs and leadership. It was a belief then by the Catholic church that THEY (the Catholic leaders) had the power to absolve sin and remit someone from purgatory. This was done often times by paying a sum to the church or the leader. Paying for your sins to be forgiven in essence.

The basis behind the reformation was that faith and faith alone will save you. Faith also in the fact that Jesus is the one who forgives.

Yes, exactly. Should of been more specific.

Thank you very much for your input. Greatly appreciated.

Good to see you both brothers in Christ.

The way is narrow indeed.

"The gate is wide that leads to destruction, and many enter into it. But the gate is narrow that leads to life, and few will actually find it."

Did he just disagree with the Indulgences? I know he nailed his 95 theses on the door, but mainly he just had a problem with the selling of Indulgences right?

It was a variety of different issues - http://www.spurgeon.org/~phil/history/95theses.htm

But his main issue was the selling of indulgences.

Last question for now:

How do Lutherans see Martin Luther?

As far as I know they still hold to the same doctrinal beliefs that he had. They still celebrate the reformation as well on Oct. 31st.

Is he looked at as a prophet? (I don't think he is, but I'm not a expert.)
