I need help with.....ok, 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

It says love is patient,....also love is not jealous.

Now my question is, what kind of jealousy is portrayed here? Is it normal jealousy? Is it saying that if a husband sees his wife with another man, he should not get jealous???

I really need help here, hopefully you will help me.

THank you :)

God bless

Thats a good question. Perhaps it means the sort of "Envying" jealous.

Thanks mate for fast reply.

So yeah, so you are saying in Corinthians it means to not get jealous of...say....other people having better houses, cars than you?

Is that what you mean? What is ur opinion? :O

Yeah it is a tough one, I'd have to sit and really think and pray about it for a while.

Since its talking about love not being jealous, it might not mean specifically material things.

This is a good topic. Do any of you other brothers or sisters have any input?

May I first ad the KJV?

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (King James Version)

4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

Charity as I glance here is the Koine/Hellenistic Greek "agape" or unconditional/charitable/sacrificial love. It is the same" love" referred to in John 3:16 and the following...

1 John 4:8 (King James Version) He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

"Suffereth" seems to be equivalent translation of "patience" in your Bible. Just in itself the Greek tries to bring out in the word long-suffering and preferring the one you are loving.

The Amplified seems to be a good representation of the intention and gist of the verse.

1 Corinthians 13:4 (Amplified Bible) Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.

---

Over all, this is how we should wish to begin and patiently sustain any discussion, with another person , as channels of Christ' love.

That is the 101 of the idea.

Thankyou

So...what is your answer/opinion? :P

So is it jealousy as in him having better cars/houses more popular etc

OR

The kind of jealousy I mentioned; husband being jealous because his wife is with another man?

That is interesting, what I was led to reply there didn't actually answer your question. "Mysterious ways?" :D

If you look at the letter up to that point, it will reveal the answer. Just go backwards into chapter 12, remembering it was written without chapters, verses or even spaces!

Paul is saying all of this, to a group of believers, who obviously are envious/jealous of each others positions/jobs and their gifts given to them by God.

It is closer to the bold above in that regard.

&

The husband/wife relationship is a covenant in God's eyes and similar His giving of His covenant to the Israelites at Sinai.

Take the following into consideration...

Exodus 20:3-6 (King James Version)

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

The most beautiful expression of love/agape is seeing how God ultimately gets revenge in His jealous rage of vengeance...

John 3:16-17 (King James Version)

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

If you wish to study more into that, try the Book of Hosea. Many see it as a good explanation of how God sees His relationship with us.

-----

Seems the elaboration on agape or unconditional/charitable love, is the main point. Paul made it the center of the letter and I can't seem to simply state the answer without expounding on agape. Every thought that seems to come out of this discussion, seems to lead back to agape!

May the agape of God reign in your heart! <3
