What is the best software to buy and use when developing a really nice website? Also, what is other software that will help achieve my goal? I'm doing everything from scratch, so I'm assuming I'll need to create graphics also. If there are any professionals here, what software do you have/use and why?

What is the website for? You could try Wix, Weebly, or Squarespace. You shouldn't be doing things "from scratch" or creating graphics because it has already been done a million times and their drag/drop solutions will look better than what you or I spend hours trying to perfect.

As above, Wix, Weebly, Squarespace, and the other mainstream website builders are probably the best bet for amateurs. WordPress is the biggest but it kinda sucks. Worth looking into but probably try Wix or Weebly.

Unless you're actually a competent developer? Then just use Sublime and grab a template/theme or a boilerplate from online somewhere.

when i did tech support for a web host that had 75,000 customers a majority of our clients used dreamweaver. it has the most public information available about it and your web host will likely provide more support for it than the lesser known options others have suggested.

This is what I use.
Other suggestions aren't really lesser known but they are web builders. Dreamweaver is software but it has a lot of things that could help you out like a web builder. Worth noting though that Dreamweaver is probably the most expensive option. And the amount of capability from Dreamweaver could be a little daunting.
