Well it wasn't about a need. I wasn't suggesting this as a "learn to program" project. I'm already a well versed programmer and know my way around basic game development. I was more thinking of it as a neat collaborative experiment than to get people who aren't already knowledgeable to become interested.
I'm no longer in school and wouldn't consider doing this with any coworkers, or friends for that matter because of the losing interest quickly point you made, so this seemed like an outlet to gauge interest. I already had some ideas laid out I'd been working on so I just figured getting some insight and assistance from others who know what they are doing would end up well. But like I said, just attempting to gauge interest. If nobody would be interested in a collaborative project it's probably just something I'm going to eventually get around to slowly on my own, but motivation is contagious IMO so having others around that share your goal is helpful.
