Hey guys, I am quite curious about how the future of windows will look like...

It has never been opensource, but files and processes has at least been accessible.

Will we allways be able to access the system files and the process lists or will they be hidden in the future?

Will they ever go back to oldschool or should we oldschoolers settle down with windows 7/linux?

I am not very good at explaining my thoughts, but if you understand what I am asking then feel free to discuss in here, if you want me to elaborate then let me know!

Microsoft has already started to adopt Open Source more readily: https://github.com/Microsoft. However the entire OS will never be truly open source because Microsoft is a business and you can't make money on oss.

Yes we'll always be able to access the system files/process list. There's technical reasons internally why that's true, but externally the system files/process list are essential for 3rd party developers - which Microsoft has already admitted are absolutely necessary for their success.

What do you mean by old school? Will they ever going to go back to pre Windows Shell UI & Command Line DOS? No. Will they go back to Windows xp/7? probably not. Will they revert new features like the Start page -> start menu, or System Settings -> control panel? Maybe if they collect telemetry saying that users want it.

Although I agree the business model wouldn't work well for Microsoft, I disagree that you can't make money on open source software. Plenty of companies make a lot of money on it, like Red Hat, Salt, Ansible, Chef..

You're right. Lemme rephrase, Microsoft can't maintain the expectations of its shareholds if its switches to completely oss.

Err, Yea what I was saying regarding oldschool would be the classic windows xp/7 looks.

Just look at the extra processes windows use today compared to the xp days, look at how unstable the softwares are today compared to then. How is it possible that the market approves this kind of change?

On the XP days things worked well, today you should be happy if you can even launch internet explorer within 10 minutes.

And how about the integrity changes? How come people approve this kind of change?

I will never understand why people would want to change os from windows 7. I had windows xp until 2011 and then I was forced to change to windows 7 due to software update requirements...

If they remade XP but with improved technology to use the new kind of drivers and hardware out there, I think the whole world would cheer...??

There's more expectations of the software today vs 2001. Everything has to be more seamless, more integrated, more connected, and smarter than ever before. I expect to be able to launch Microsoft Word via Cortana voice, add pictures from the internet to my document, email it to my mom inapp, and then save the file to the cloud. The market is driving the need for more processes, Microsoft isn't just doing it for shits and giggles.

People are just upset because change is hard. They know how to get to their family pictures, do taxes in Excel 2003, find their settings, play solitare. They've learned to use 7 and are resistant to switching to a different product, even if it's better. Control Panel -> System Settings, File Explorer -> Start search, ect. There's nothing wrong with Microsoft or Windows, it's just different.

Unfortunately it's not easy to 'remake XP but with improved technology to use the new kind of drivers and hardware out there'. First, its not Apple. Second, why don't cars look the same as the original Ford just with a better engine?

I see your point!

But at the same time a lot of people leave microsoft and welcome linux because of the bad performance, isn't performance important for windows anymore ? Or do I need a NASA computer to run it...

I have never seen a fully working windows 8 - 10 computer, they have all been slow, had fps problems and other kind of performance problems. Why would people sacrifice performance for beauty and comfort?

That is my question
