just set realistic goals. when i read chess books, i use 3 sessions per unit/chapter/section. first session i just skim the unit to get a feel for what it is. second session i take out the board and follow the moves (or in your case, write the code). third session i review it. dunno what your schedule is like. you can either do the same 3 session strategy per day. do 1 session, then go eat dinner, then do session 2, then brush your teeth, then do session 3. or you can do 3 sessions per week. or fit it into whatever schedule you're looking for. the main thing is breaking it down into something realistic.

I think a big factor in this is really how much time you have in addition the question of how fast your trying to get through said topic. One of the problems I had with some books was the boring selection of topics most used to demonstrate pieces of code. If this is part of the issue you are having try finding some more interesting uses of the topics. This has always helped me get through topics faster as well as have a deeper understand of said topic.
For example I have seen a million grade book type of topics that are very dull yet you can learn the exact same topics used to make a small game etc.
