alright, just built computer
specs not important, getting to BIOS just fine

SATA Port 1>120 GB SSD
SATA Port 2>500 GB HDD 5400 RPM
USB 3.0 MoBo Port 1> External HDD

Boot preference USB>SATA 1>SATA 2

I've formatted the external HDD as a botable drive, even my laptop views it as a fuckin cd when I plug it in
I've tried formatting it as FAT32 and as NTFS, neither seem to work

I've tried disconnecting my HDD and plugging the external HDD in the SATA connection and changing it to the first boot

after leaving BIOS I get this wonderful black screen that says:
reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key.

am I doing something wrong?
I don't have a CD drive on this computer (don't fucking need them now days everything's digital, you should be able to boot from usb drive but it's not working for me)
I really hope I'm just doing something wrong

my remaining FG goes to the person that solves my issue.

alright, so I plugged in the SSD from my laptop (main boot drive on my laptop) and tried to go into bios but missed it, then it loads up my win 10 laptop onto my new desktop
LOL alright, w/e i'm rolling with it for now, I'm going to try to clone this SSD to the HDD on the desktop (it's a 1 tb laptop SSD and won't all fit on the 120 gb ssd for the desktop)

this is a temp fix to get things started but what the hell, what's the worst that could... well nvm let's not get into that for now :D at least I've got an OS on the desktop (however temporary it may be)

OS trouble isn't hardware...

Update: cloned drive doesn't boot to desktop, but does have Windows 10 repair splash,I'm repairing Windows as a fresh installation without keeping old files and we'll see how it goes

are you writing a program to solve the OS issue? sounds more like you just built a computer and having setup problems, which is for either Computer Building Discussion or Misc Computer Help forum.

this is the only subforum I saw related to computers, though I only looked over the massive list of subforums once.

partially right but not quite... the problem was in the way I was putting the files onto the usb drive...
these are the steps I missed:
in CMD:
D: CD BOOT and hit enter. Where ā€œDā€ is your DVD drive letter.

CD BOOT and hit enter to see the below message.

BOOTSECT.EXE/NT60 H: "Where "H" is your USB drive letter.

the new system wasn't recognizing it as a boot drive for this reason </3

I've managed to get everything sorted out now though. and I would suppose you could call this programming/hardware issue

it's fine if you didn't know which forum to put it in. it happens to a lot of people. that's why i linked the correct forum. but it has as much to do with programming as it does with league of legends in the sense that both are related to computers.

glad you got it working, though
