I was thinking about delving into the world of programming. But I have little experience with this and as far as having a specific goal in mind to learn I do not have one. Would anybody have resources (aside from Google) that would serve as a good introduction into programming and the like?

Also, I think this is mostly a matter of preference, but is there any specific language/languages that are ideal to learn?

If you go with java there is a pretty good book "Head First Java - second edition" The pdf is available if you google.
