Software will not boost your gain unless the manufacturer as limited it and your device drivers allow for the wireless nic to be un-limited. I haven't seen much software to do this in windows (linux is plentiful) so I assume that what ever you have download is most likely adware.
To boost your gain I suggest getting a directional high gain antenna like a yagi.
