what's the difference between activeperl and perl?

perl already comes with most linux distros but I've been trying to install activeperl, but no luck...i'm referring to this link http://docs.activestate.com/activeperl/5.18/install.html

if you're trying to learn perl a day before an interview, i recommend you drop it.

how long you think it will take me to learn perl and become "proficient" at it..i'm obviously not trying to learn something in a day. I have a friend who says his company may be hiring testers and they use perl and they use a lot of unix commands. so i've been just reading some beginner tutorials and have been playing with syntax, loops, and arrays. nothing big so far.

as long as it takes. you won't get "proficient" at it until you use it regularly for a while.

learn on the job. you're an entry level person; they won't expect you to know perl. if you intend to work there, i suggest you go through the interview and see if you get an offer. then you can look at perl and see if it's something you wanna do for a living. you're better off getting more comfortable with unix than with perl imo.

asking things like "what's the difference between activeperl and perl?" is a bad sign. if you have to ask something you can easily google, you won't be seen as very self-efficient employee.

with that said, i've seen very little perl and never used it personally. if memory serves, it has a bad reputation, but it's supposed to be good with strings.

IMO the best way to learn it, like any other language, is to use it. A lot.

Nah, perl is still used quite a bit in the linux/unix world and be viable for quite a while longer I think.
