i have virtualbox on my mac
having start up issues says no medium to boot

Its just like a real computer, you are going to have to attach an ISO file to your virtual DVD drive. So it can boot into the ISO and install the OS onto your virtual disk drive. right now it sounds like you created a virtual disk but its complaining because its blank you don't have an operating system installed.
