Hey everyone. I am currently pursing a Degree in Computer Science, or at least I am trying to. I am at the moment just finishing up my general courses and starting my first programming orientated/related course this semester. I am in the military and find it hard to do more than 1-2 class(es) a semester and therefore find my progress lacking. Therefore, I am looking into self teaching myself at least some basic programming. However, I need a starting point. The biggest point, which language would be ideal in self teaching?

You should start with Java or C#. They're both relatively easy and it's very easy to transfer to other languages from them.

If you're starting with java.

1. Download eclipse and java jdk http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-ide-java-ee-developers/keplersr1
2. Watch video tutorials on youtube and follow along.
The New Boston is a good site to use cus the guy doing the java tutorials is using eclipse as well http://thenewboston.org/list.php?cat=31
3. Buy a book (i recommend Introduction to Java Programming by Daniel Liang) and do all the exercises

If you're going with C#.

1. Download and install visual studio express (make sure you select c# as your language during install process) http://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs#d-express-windows-desktop
2. Find tutorials on youtube or go to microsofts website and follow their tutorials
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/bb798022.aspx
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa288436(v=vs.71).aspx
3. Find a book and do the exercises. (i can't recommend any cus i don't have any)

Why do people think it's stupid for people to use resources they have access to other than google? There are reasons for things like this. My reason, if you must know, I was on lunch break and didn't have time to research. so I decided it would be easy to just make a topic and check it when I got home from work. Great if I got an answer. If not, I could just google and research myself.

Thank you for actually posting something useful and even going through the trouble of helping me getting started. :D

In other words, you wanted someone to line up the results of a google search for you. You don't actually think you're the first person to ask the question you asked, right?
Google "which language would be ideal in self teaching?" and see what you find- oh wait.. you don't have the time.. Why didn't you just go a head and name this thread "Spoonfeeding time, I got some google questions!"

Don't worry about us, you're the only one missing out here. The people who don't want to spoonfeed you are more like your parents than your slaves- in other words responsible people.

lol. yes. I am going to be doing A LOT of work by self teaching myself all this yet I can't do a google search. Don't even know why you go out of your way to write this drivel. Most likely, someone who posted wouldn't have used google to find out for me but would actually know themselves. So, no, it wouldn't be a "line up of the results of a google search". Now once again, it's not that I didn't "have time". It was: I didn't have access. I found an efficient way to find something out. While at work, I can't research anything, but there is still the chance of someone posting here. When I get home, I can just see if someone posted here, if not I can just google it. Either way I find out and since posting a topic doesn't effect anyone on this forum in any, it shouldn't bother you. If it does bother you, that is your problem.

Yes they are. Your point is? Or are you judging my whole character based on me asking a question and like the other guy thinking I'm too lazy to google it and will quit soon? Well I guess time will tell...

Don't listen to them. Those idiots don't even know shit about programming... all of Eagl3s1ght's post are "google it" or some theoretical shit (he posts to try to make it look like he knows something).

Just ignore the newbs. There are a lot of helpful people here on d2jsp when it comes to programming.
