He didn't ruin it completely.
He left out the part about a database back-end and server side language like php/asp.net..

This is what I thought it would may have been, also I was unsure if it was an app or not..

To be UNFAIR, it could have been a java applet =D

If it's on the internet and it functions as a 'tool' of some sort it's probably safe to call it a web application (app for short).
Web applications don't necessarily have to be anything fancy..

On that note, why the heck aren't they using fullscreen mode?!
