Hello,

I have a 3y/o laptop (HP pavilion dv6)...

I know its some old trash but as a student its hard to just buy a new one...

2 days ago it started doing something weird and I expect it to be a hardware issue but not entirely...

It suddenly freezes and the screen slowly turns white/grey gradually untill the entire screen is frozen that way... I expect it to be a hardware issure since the computer only does this when its actually working (playing a game etc) and only when it gets kinda hot..

Before this, it usually just froze the screen but this seems a bit more sinister

Any ideas what this might be ? I expect the videocard to be crashing but I have no knowledge about computers really :S

A helpful answer will be rewarded :)

/e Oh btw... when I use a hdmi + tv and runs split screen, its only the screen on the laptop that fucks up.. the computer itself isnt frozen... still works fine using the tv

So as programmers where do you think our knowledge lies? Certainly not troubleshooting hardware peoblems

Anyway download hwmonitor and post a screenshot of temps probably overheating

there is some models of the HP pavilion dv6

where the cooler isn't cooling so the cpu overheating

maybe it could be that but not sure.

try google your full series of the dv6000 then find knowing error's that could happen to those kind of model.

A friend of mine had a problem similar a few years ago. It's probably just the screen if it sill works with your tv.

It's probably caused by a faulty capacitor.

You could open up the screen and replace all the capacitors (less than $1.00 each), but that requires some skill with a soldering iron.

Or you can just buy a replacement screen for like $50-$100 and they're easy to install.

Or you could pay someone to do it but they'll probably rape you in the ass.
