Or something else for video recording?

Which do you feel has less impact on game performance?

Is DXtory worth the $?

I hear fraps is good. The only software people recommend to me when I mention video recording.

dxtory is definitely worth it.

Frags is nice and simple, but overall you can't customise it. If it performs poorly on your system you're just screwed.

However, dxtory has more configuration options and overall more usage options.
Reasons dxtory is worth it
  • Configurable recording codecs.
  • Better UI overlay.
  • Game to game configuration
  • Can optionally "stripe" data between multiple disks in a raid-like fashion.
  • Has the ability to scale the recording size, allowing you to record in 720p while playing in 1080+(saving power)
  • It can manage multiple audio channels/sound cards.
  • Not just limited to recording, you can use it as in input for livestreaming

Those are at least the reasons I use dxtory. I have fraps as well, for those rainy days when dxtory isn't compatible with something or I want to record the desktop, rather than an application.

camtasia studio 8 is also another decent option. has most of the same features like down sizing the recording area or down sampling the entire screen to reduce fps drop/less stress. its paid though.
