How do you bill clients in general?

and, more importantly..

How do you bill your clients that live far away from you?

If it's for personal I email an invoice
If I have actually met the person or they live in town I send the invoice via mail.

If I'm free-lancing for a company...they have always handled pay in a timely manner.

Start with a contract. Always enforce it and always get at least 1/3 up front. Use an invoice-generating program.

I send them an invoice.

Want to get them to pay early? offer a 5-10% discount for early payment. (and tack on a 10% contingency sum when you are quoting)

I used to enforce a 10% late-payment thing, but it was hard as fuck to enforce see following:

Quote
The client agrees to pay $x +GST, cost, for outlined work. This amount excludes Web hosting costs and any extra
charges incurred such as revisions or font services. The Payments for all services rendered excluding extra charges by the
consultant will be split equally into thirds, Any additional work will be charged at $x +GST per hour.

Each Payment will be made within 5 business days after the following events:
1) Signing of this agreement by the client (work will begin when first payment is received)
2) Client Agreement of the final Design Concept.
3) Completion of Website (online and functioning)

The consultant must give client written notice regarding any work which will incur extra charges, also the consultant
must receive from the client written consent before undertaking Work which will incur extra charges. Any of these extra
charges incurred by the client will be paid within 5 business days of Completion of Work, or within 5 business days of
cancellation of agreement.

If a payment is not made 30 Days from the invoice date 10% of the billed amount will be added to the total fee, each 30
days following, another 10% will be added.

I prefer the semi-auto hunting rifles but I hear they're bad news.
So I go with my Sig Sauer with a magazine that can hold 8 shots.

WHMCS, it connect to several different server management control panels and does automatic hosting account setup and also works great for general invoicing - and it's free with HostGator.
