I got a few qs about webdesign. I'm very intrested in taking up HTML before I advance into PHP and others.
-When designing a website in HTML, must I create a template and build around the template?
-How long does it take for one start-to-finish to have a good understanding of HTML

I know it's not the hardest of languages but this is where I want to start to build structure into my programming career.
I will be attending courses for PHP in January and would like to have knowledge of HTML.
I am very familiar with the use of FTPs and such so I must secure a domain to practice my works on.

Thanks for the answers guys!

html4 and below is very straight forward. you only have to know the basics and common tags. it doesn't take long to learn. i havent learned html5 so i won't comment on that.

css on the other hand takes a lot more experience to use comfortably.

and i dont know what you mean by "must i create a template"

Hey man thanks for answering!

By template I'm referring to, lets say like jsp in example.  You have the back drop created by box's, tabs, links, etc.  Do I create the graphic using Adobe or all with code?

That's where I'm getting confused, when I'm starting my HTML tutorial I'm making websites with plain text and stuff like that.  Wondernig where the fancy stuff comes in.

the fancy stuff you're referring to is css/javascript/flash/etc, not really html. html provides structure, css provides styling (look and feel), and javascript provides functionality

there are many out there which you're welcome to use or you can create your own. if you're making a forum, it's a pretty stupid idea to make it from scratch. whereas if you're making a custom site for a client, you probably need to.

you will probably use something like photoshop and dreamweaver, but that's up to you.

imo you should spend more time learning css than php
