Hey,

I want to start a small website up for putting some of my songs on there, some pictures of my adventures and a blog. I haven't done one before and I've being trying to read and understand from many videos and guides online..

I'm looking at getting the domain name and hosting through godaddy.com, however, some of the options for hosting are a bit misleading to me?

Anyways, preferably if someone that has extensive website creation knowledge can sign onto AIM, Xfire, Google Talk, whatever sort of IM program to kind of walk me through what I need I would really appreciate it. I don't want to keep constantly asking new questions in the thread...

Thanks.

You could easily just start a blog (blogspot, wordpress, etc) and have your pictures/music linked from there. Have your pictures hosted by Picasa/Flickr and your music hosted by SoundCloud.

There's very little reason to pay for your own webserver unless you're trying to create a real webpage for a business or something.

Of course I have done such things. However, I've gotten "older" and need things more "professional" as this would also have many other aspects for my professional life as well. I mean as if it costs so much money to get a domain name and get some hosting.. I have a job..

Not old or professional enough to understand how to properly use quotations, apparently. Still makes me think of this hilarious site: http://www.unnecessaryquotes.com/

In any case, you can still register for a domain name (and fairly cheaply, I might add) while still running Wordpress or Blogspot behind it. As I said, it largely depends on the use case, but so far you haven't really given any compelling reason why that wouldn't fit your needs... but perhaps that's because you don't actually understand how far you can go on Wordpress/Blogger alone. A lot of professional-grade sites - and even businesses - use those to drive their sites because of the power and the convenience of their tools.

If you're hell-bent on building a website from scratch, then you should first look around these forums for similar threads about hosting services. The consensus around here seems to be that there are far better choices than godaddy.

As for the rest... learn to Google? Or at the very least, learn to ask better and more specific questions than just "I want website, halp".

Now a days, you do not need to be a geek to start a blog/website.

There are plenty of CMS (content management systems) around which offer extensions/plugins to suit your needs.

As irimi says, you can use those free services and still buy your own domain name and link it over. But if this is for individual profile for potential employers, honestly i feel the content is more important then the domain name.

i always felt domain names are more for corporate/organization image more then individuals like us

a few ways to go about this.

1: as ccloo has pointed out, you can use a CMS
- joomla
- drupal
- wordpress

2: learn to code and design and make one from scratch
- i wouldnt suggest this, as it takes a while to learn what your doing, and it seems like you want to have this site up fairly soon.
-learning how to do it is not a bad thing, so do it if you want to, just be patient.

3: hire someone to do your website.
- there are tons of people skilled at making websites, you could hire a local web designer and have them do your website if its something you really want, but it will cost you some money.
sounds good
If Mr Fel PM's you or offers to help beware he's not a trustworthy guy....

Please be cautious when dealing with this individual.... ie taking or making bets with him or allowing him to help you with your website.

During a baseball bet he got welched and in return he ended up not being able to pay his debt for baseball. The moderators there placed him on the welchers list. Because we had bet multiple time in the past and we had spoke frequently, I felt bad for him and since I was at 8k fg and he was broke I just gave him the FG he needed to pay his debt. He said he would not only pay back his debt and that he was grateful he give me all FG he earned betting after making his first 7k fg back. He chose not to pay back his debt and he came to this forum and started betting on fights. He left JSP for months and just recently returned to start betting again here and I saw he had logged on and asked him to please pay me back the 600 fg he owes me and this comment below was his response.
If it's any consolation, the fg you sent me was only used to pay people i didnt have enough fg to pay because i got welched.
But he still never paid them back and now he's 9k fg up and hasn't given me a dime.... please avoid this guy at all cost.
