I'm going to school for programming, still fairly new (took a couple java courses and now taking C++). However, every time I take a programming course there's at least 1 person who just really understands it in on a different level (I think of it like programming street-smarts), always because they learned it off the internet.

I was hoping for some suggestions on this (particularly for C++ or C#). Should I just jump into and frequent some programming forums, or watch every youtube vid, or what? I'd love to really understand programming but right now I feel limited with only my programming "book-smarts".

Thanks!

Don't worry about how you're doing relative to other people in your class. If you're keeping up with the material, you'll do just fine.

Not really comparing, I just want to learn more and the class isn't going fast enough for me. (nerd-status obv)

the best way to learn on your own is to pick up a side project and try to do it. this may be feasible if you've already learned most of the fundamentals, but if you haven't made your way through OOP yet, the scope of "projects" you'll be able to do will be incredibly limited.

If you are a true beginner just try doing simple things just as getting the radius and circumference of a circle, area/width of a rectangle. If you know the basics of that then do these with functions perhaps to get a grasp on that. I really can't say where you should start to look. I was in the same position you were in and I just learned by getting the book that my class assigned and started to read away. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions[basic questions]... I'm learning myself.

I would agree with whoever in this thread said that you just need to get some practical experience by practicing more difficult things than the book suggests.
