Basically you form groups and over the course of a weekend (48 hours) you are supposed to make a game and submit it to some global/national site or something. Gets seen by developers etc.

Anyways, I am obviously pretty new. A friend of mine in class has asked me (and others) if we want to do the project. I notified him of my novice training. His reply:

"they expect you to learn as you go"

I understand. You would obviously have to learn as you go. But you need to know what to learn. And I certainly don't have that knowledge.

I am wondering if it is a good idea to go in hard on this thing. Or if it will distract from other stuff I am learning about.

I have no idea what is involved in a game making process - he mentioned multiple languages, IDEs, etc....

go for it and maybe you'll expose yourself to something new. just dont plan on winning anything. it's only a weekend, so don't worry about it distracting you. it's not like you have to take 6 months off from school.

Do it! Make a game like Ladder Slasher or something..
I did something similar in college and learned a lot from my colleagues who were programming masterminds, wasn't a contest or anything though. A good experience nonetheless.
