Bash Operator '<' - Topic

I know grep/pipe/etc and the difference between '>' and '>>', but I don't know how to use '<'. My problem is that googling the char '<' doesn't works very well... I need a simple example in C how to read in from a file with '<'. Any suggestions where I could find something easy?

The file to read in looks like this:

is essentially the same as

- you just read from stdin
