Is Ruby worth learning? If so, what are some practical uses?

Ruby on Rails (web framework) is the only thing I've ever heard with regards to Ruby. Supposedly it's a very fast/easy way to make web apps. There are plenty of alternatives though.

Lol yea, Rails is the main reason I was interested in Ruby. Seems to be hawt shit right now. Actually I haven't had a very hard time learning Ruby so far. It's very similar to Python :D

so if you already know python, why aren't you using django? what weaknesses have you found? Or are you just trying to buffer up your resume to expand on other opportunities?

Never used django. I use Pyramid (by the pylons proj) :) I'm learning this for diversity. Call it a thirst for knowledge, and yes it would look nice on my resume. What a pretty name, Ruby

Ruby is cool, but now "the shit" is scala + lift or nodejs + express ;>

rails is so passé...

ok, just kidding. ruby + rails / python + django are "the" way to make web apps now, with best docs and communities. Go for it! If you're looking for job in the industry it's really easy to get one involving rails.
