My university, 1st semester : Java
2nd semester : Java, C++

Java is great, lots of tutorials and free libraries to use.
At college I did some VB.net, but it's so easy you won't be able to code in any other language.

I'd agree with you if it was for a career programmer, but for someone who just wants to learn how programming works I think C has just too many details that get in the way of learning core concepts.

probably true but learning C will give you a strong foundation in coding which will allow you to learn languages like java with minimal effort

We need to benchmark cython verse crystal one day.
I've been messing around with Crystal for a few day now at AbDuCt's behest. It is pretty amazing. Here are my conclusions so far:

Pro's for Crystal:

  • Cython's performance boost comes from knowing some C and then leveraging that in your Cython code, with some trial and error optimizations. The performance boost from Crystal is automatic, you don't need to know shit to get it (which is really nice for amateurs like me who don't know shit).

Con's for Crystal:

  • Every time I Google "crystal programming" I end up with a bunch of results from new agers who are trying to prepare their quartz crystals for healing rituals!

That's my biggest con as well. Basically if you can't interpret the documentation you either have to get on IRC into their devel channel or join their google docs group and create a post asking for help.

Luckily most of their documentation is pretty good.
