I just have a question.  Do they let you use the IDE/compiler that you want?  Or do you have to adhere to their choice of software?

It varies. I am currently working for a company that makes me use netbeans for Java (not my language of choice) because they use the netbeans gui builder.

Previously, I have had the freedom to use whatever I want.

Get used to Visual Studio. Best advice I can give you. Because 90% of all jobs with more than one dev, will use the same IDE. And in most of my personal experiences, a lot of companies love their Visual Studio.

I work for a concern and we may use whatever program suits us, even though there are "standards" so occuring errors can be eradicated by the team also and to be able to look over one's shoulder and not get confused.

But we have total freedom with what we use as long as we get our stuff done.

Anyways we use different IDEs for different applications as well, as we program for different devices, not only web or desktop applications but also mobile device apps.
