Top 10 Best Free Web Editors for Windows according to: http://webdesign.about.com/od/windowshtmleditors/tp/free-windows-editors.htm

I use Notepad++ and now HTML-Kit. I really enjoy HTML-Kit so far as it gives me side by side code comparison, tabs, color coded text, shows color hexadecimal codes in in the text. i.e. #000000 shows up as black or #ffffff shows up as white, etc.

The only reason to use Windows is if you're developing Windows applications (i.e. mainstream gaming). Otherwise, you're severely hampering yourself unless you spend the two or three weeks (months?) to get all the equivalent tools/utilities on Windows that you automatically get in Linux.

Most software companies are unix/Linux shops because software as a service is the big things these days -- it's not about writing software that people install on their Windows machines anymore, but rather, about implementing services you access on the web using your browser. The out-of-the-box utility of Linux and the fact that it's free means that it's the de facto choice for almost everybody.

lack of hotkeys in other editors make me want to kill someone, it's like I'm living in 1970's with anything vi related

but still, bluefish #1 editor for GUI
