Hey all. So I am a programming student for now but I hope to graduate and then go for my bachelors in software engineering. I am very, very knowledge when it comes to computer hardware but I don't know the requirements heavy programming comes with as I haven't gotten that far. I am looking at a new MacBook Pro as a school/coding laptop and I was wondering how much ram is advised. 4GB, 8GB, 16GB? I was thinking of just getting the 4/8 (whichever comes with the model I decide on) and upgrade later if I need to.

I am looking at getting one of the quad-core i7 for the hyperthreading benefits but am stumped on RAM. I also have no idea how much RAM OSX uses as I am new to Mac.

TL;DR? How much RAM do you find being used when running, compiling, etc. coding? Java, C, C++, etc.

8gm ram is plenty. 16gb is great, but it's seriously overkill for college.

Bloodshed is group that develops the Dev-C++ IDE. To my knowledge, it was discontinued and ridiculously out dated.

I loved JCreator. It was an amazing IDE. However, it seems to have fallen under the radar in recent times in the shadow of eclipse, jgrasp, and intellij.

If your books are recomending you use these IDEs that is an indication your books are themselves outdated.

I know the books are outdated. Even my OS book is outdated and that was published in 09/10?... something like that. Only in CC at the moment but I hope to get into a good school soon. Also I am only learning the basics which is why I always ask total noob questions. haha

For school, you need jack shit for RAM. I got through 3 years of CS undergrad using a laptop with 3GB RAM, using a VM for Operating Systems class and for Mobile Development class. And I only upgraded because I wanted something to run League of Legends at more than 20FPS.

That sounds like my current situation to be honest. I am a technophile though so I usually have to get the best of whatever technology I am using. I originally was going to get the lowest ram and ssd they had, get the best processor I could get, and then replace the SSD with something larger. As for the ram I was planning on staying at 4GB and upgrading later with better ram if I needed to do so. It was an excuse to pick the brains of everyone around here.

It honestly is. My home PC I built runs 8GB but I've only managed to hit about 5-7GB depending on what I am running.

Then go for 16 GB, this is one reason I chose to go big.

Hello again.
