i've always had problems with sql developer when i cancel long-running select queries (eg: forget an index). takes FOREVER to rollback. and it won't let me do anything else until it finishes, and i can't close it unless i go to Force Quit. is there some secret setting i can use?

Not that I know of. SQLDeveloper is actually pretty shitty software in that way. Cancelling any long-running query just takes forever. If you aren't already, get updated to v4 as it improves the situation a bit but YMMV. Some people have been recommending TOAD to me as well. At some point when I have time I'm going to give that a shot and see if it's a bit more polished.
