yes usually they do, at least in my home country,

for some languages there's just one choice e.g

java --> eclipse
c# --> visual studio

What do you use Eclipse for then? I'm just curious as to what it does better than IDEA. After using both fairly extensively (Eclipse 4 years and IDEA 2 years) I can't think of anything that Eclipse does better.

I am a software developer/analyst and we stick to using VS 2012 as our IDE. Wouldnt even be an option to switch as we use the Source Control Integration. Just easier if all developers share the same IDE.

I work as a programmer and we all use Eclipse, mainly for it's SVN plugin (makes it extremely easy to share code).

You will most likely have to adhere to the IDE they tell you to use if you're working with other programmers. If you're working on a project alone, you can probably use whatever you want.

The SVN plugin in IDEA works really well too in my experience. Like rockonkenshin, I've used both Eclipse and IDEA for several years, and would also recommend IDEA over Eclipse any day. That being said, Eclipse isn't as bad as people make it out to be, but IDEA is simply better in my opinion.

There are things that really bug me about the SVN plugin in IDEA, though. It doesn't seem to keep a local cache of the SVN history, making diff-ing things annoying if the SVN repo isn't local to you. I work on the east coast of US and our SVN server is located in Switzerland, which makes it really painful.

Speaking from my experience, if you're the only person on the project you do whatever you want to get it done. Otherwise you'll have to have your group agree on one.
