C#

java has plenty of job openings, but you don't want to work those
C++ you'll never compete with the existing workforce

and unlike some detractors claim, you're not tied to the MS platform (see Mono) plus, it really is a superior language to java

Extremely project dependent.
I prefer java most recently though,
it used to be limited by speed and such but the new libraries and jvm's make it a viable option for most programs.
C# doesn't port around as well as java anymore, (as easily I should say)
but then C# has some tools that java just can't compete with atm.

Choosing a programming language is quite job dependent... Many experienced coders know multiple languages so they can work with what's given to them.

If you're looking for a language to learn, I would suggest learning c++ 1st.

Also, while many people swear by java, the fact remains that many companies don't want anything to do with java. To quote Steve Jobs - "Java's not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It's this big heavyweight ball and chain."

I work for the sheriff's department in my county and for our systems to search records of suspects and the employee back-end tools etc. are all programmed in Java. I am not saying Java is better than C++ but just saying some people still use Java ^_^
