Unless you need professional audio editing software, or want to play specific games you can have everything on Linux.

Ubuntu comes with tons of stuff pre-installed, so you are more or less ready to do whatever you want. If I remember correctly it comes with a google-store like application where you can browse and install software with ease.

I am using Arch Linux both on my home pc that I use for gaming (Dota 2, CS, Hearthstone), and my laptop that I use for work, using 2 monitors and a docking station, have no problems whatsoever.

You will need a week or two to get used to how things work, but it's more intuitive than Windows in my opinion. The feel of your Linux will greatly depend on your desktop environment, the closest to Windows is probably Gnome 3.

what is this mythical "software"? Most home users need facebook machine. If you need specialized software, okay. But if you're typical home user, there is nothing lacking in linux world.

To give you an example, at work I needed to put OpenVPN on a linux machine and it was not installing properly using apt and I had to build from source and manually install a bunch of dependencies.

And what is the problem with apt install openvpn? Because that got it running for me on 160+ hosts. No compilation needed.

Some issue with dependencies that were giving install errors. I'm not saying this is a typical case, I'm just saying you can sometimes run into these issues. And you probably won't have this issue with Ubuntu, but there are also issues of certain software not being available for a particular distribution. I know that has happened at least a couple times using CentOS.

/e You can often build things from source, but that's kind of my point. It's just more annoying than I would want for a home PC.
